About Us
What is Japanese Jujutsu? "Traditional jujitsu is actually the parent art of judo, aikido and several styles of karate. In essence, jujitsu is a blend of all three because it's the traditional source of all three." Black Belt Magazine (March 2019) Along with the well-documented character and confidence-building aspects of learning a martial art, and of course the physical benefits, our martial arts focuses on budo taijutsu which translates as the “body movement of the warrior way”. The foundation is a proven system of unarmed self-defence - strikes, throws and grappling, and is effective against both armed and unarmed attacks from a stronger or larger opponent. Students are also trained in traditional Japanese weaponry such as sword, staff and other hand-held weapons with a strong emphasis on using your environment and surroundings to help you stay safe.

Owners and principal instructors Evan & Erica Whetter share a passion for helping people become the best versions of themselves. Expressing this through teaching and mentorship is more than just a profession but a way of life. Their passion became focused when they co-founded YCP Martial Arts. Their unique take on martial arts stems in part from their professional background as musicians and decades of experience helping people learn and develop. Holding teaching licenses (5th Dan Black Belt) in Japanese jujutsu has allowed them to share this passion with others.

"YCP" stands for You Can Play, a reflection of their experience that people learn best when they're having fun. It is also a legacy of their Japanese sensei who after demonstrating a technique would look around the dojo and say... "Understand? Good. Play!"
