Why is learning Japanese Jujutsu so good for teens?

It's a time of life when lots of changes are happening. Navigating these can be challenging. We all know self-esteem and confidence are incredibly important in developing a strong sense of identity and worth. Along with making new friends and a sense of belonging, these are just some of the benefits of learning a martial art. At YCP Martial Arts, we model our junior adults (12-15yo) on our adult jujutsu program, tailored to the needs of teenagers.

What should my teen wear to class?

Comfortable athletic wear is fine for the first class. If they decide to continue, a gi (uniform) will be required.

Will my teen need any additional equipment?

A gi is required for training, and as they progress, they may need protective gear for advanced drills. We’ll discuss all equipment needs in detail.

How often should my teen attend classes?

We recommend training at least 2-3 times per week for steady improvement and skill development.

What do we focus on?

Nobody wins a fight. Although we teach age-appropriate self-defence, our students learn to de-escalate conflict and avoid violence unless there is no other option. This is the best form of self-defence! Keeping the "Art" in Martial Arts Beyond the obvious physical benefits, the cultural and artistic aspects of Japanese jujutsu enrich the lives of our martial artists. Often, what begins as a physical outlet and confidence-building exercise can lead to a lifetime of enjoyment.

Are there opportunities for competition?

While Japanese Jujutsu is traditionally non-competitive, we do offer opportunities for students to participate in demonstrations and controlled sparring to test their skills.
